The United Kingdom has taken another historic step in developing a sixth-generation fighter jet. Under the leadership of the UK Ministry of Defence and in collaboration with BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, and MBDA UK, the design of the Combat Air Flying Demonstrator (CAFD) has been unveiled to the public for the first time. The prototype is scheduled for its maiden test flight in 2027.
The CAFD project is being developed under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a joint initiative between the UK, Japan, and Italy. The newly revealed aircraft is not just a technology demonstrator, but also a platform that lays the technological foundation for the final fighter jet to be produced under GCAP.
The Air Power of the Future: Key Features of CAFD
The next-generation CAFD fighter jet features a single-seat cockpit, twin engines, a delta wing structure, and canted twin tail fins. Its design prioritises stealth capabilities to ensure reduced radar visibility and enhanced air-to-air performance on the battlefield.
The development and production processes for the prototype are being carried out at BAE Systems’ Warton facility in Lancashire. Cutting-edge methods such as robotics, digital engineering solutions, and advanced composite materials are being used in the manufacturing phase.
GCAP Strengthens International Defence Cooperation
The CAFD project is jointly conducted with Japan and Italy under GCAP. This international partnership enhances cost-efficiency and fosters technological diversity. GCAP outlines the roadmap for the production of sixth-generation fighter jets, expected to become fully operational by 2035.
The UK’s Strategic Goal: Maintaining Air Superiority
Experts emphasise that the CAFD project is not only a technological move but also a critical component of the UK’s strategy to maintain and strengthen air superiority. Defence industry sources note that this initiative will also bolster NATO cooperation capabilities.
