In a detailed analysis, the Financial Times — one of the world’s most respected economic publications — identified Istanbul Airport, together with Dubai and Riyadh, as one of the three new major leaders of global aviation. The report emphasised that the rapid growth reached by the region’s aviation sector corresponds to “capacity increases equivalent to three Heathrow airports”, and noted that Istanbul is positioned as one of the strongest players at the centre of this competition.
The Financial Times analysis highlighted that Istanbul has evolved beyond being merely a transit point and has gained a unique appeal both as a transfer hub and as a tourist destination. The report underlined that the dual-direction increase in demand in the city is the most critical factor distinguishing Istanbul from Dubai and Riyadh.
Towards a 200 Million Passenger Capacity
The analysis emphasised that with its current 90 million passenger capacity, Istanbul Airport is already one of the region’s strongest hubs. It was noted that with ongoing expansion efforts, the airport will reach six runways and increase its capacity to 200 million passengers. This target is expected to move Istanbul to a much more advanced position in the global mega-hub race.

Commenting on the assessment, İGA CEO Selahattin Bilgen described Istanbul’s strategic geographical advantage with the following words:
“Istanbul lies right at the centre of the Africa–Asia–Europe triangle. This geographical position makes us a natural global hub. The more countries you are connected to, the more attractive you become; as airlines from different countries arrive, your network expands even further. Istanbul is at the heart of this cycle.”
Bilgen stated that with its expanding network, human resources management, and increasing international demand, Istanbul Airport strengthens its position in global competition year after year.
