Fake Bomb Threats Hit Airlines: 728 Cases in 2024!

According to data from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), airlines in India experienced a significant rise in fake bomb threats in 2024. IndiGo was the most affected airline, receiving 216 bomb threats, followed by Air India with 179 threats and Vistara with 153 threats.

Fake Bomb Threats and Arrests

Throughout 2024, a total of 728 bomb threats were recorded. Of these, 714 targeted domestic airlines, while the remaining 14 were aimed at international carriers. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, stated that only 13 individuals were arrested in connection with these fake bomb threats.

Bomb Threats Against International Airlines

Among international carriers, Emirates faced the highest number of bomb threats (5), followed by Air Arabia (3). Additionally, Aeroflot, Air Canada, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air each received one threat.

Security Measures Against Bomb Threats

In a written response, Minister Mohol detailed the security measures taken against fake bomb threats. BCAS has developed various protocols to counter such threats, and a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) has been established at each airport. BTAC is responsible for analyzing threats and implementing appropriate actions.

Supply Chain Issues and Flight Delays

Airlines continue to face cancellations and flight delays due to adverse weather conditions, supply chain disruptions, and maintenance issues. Notably, flights operated with Pratt & Whitney-powered A320 NEO aircraft were affected by supply chain constraints.

CAT III-Certified Airports

The Indian government announced that six airports in the country have received CAT III certification, allowing flight operations in zero-visibility conditions. These airports include Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Amritsar, Jaipur, and Bengaluru.
