One of the world’s largest airlines, Emirates, has announced its participation in the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Turbulence Aware platform.
Integration of Turbulence Aware and Lido mPilot
Emirates will be the first airline to integrate IATA’s Turbulence Aware platform into the latest version of Lido mPilot, Lufthansa Systems’ mobile navigation solution. This integration will provide pilots with real-time, highly accurate turbulence information, enhancing flight safety, enabling more efficient navigation, and allowing for optimized flight route planning.
New Technologies in the Emirates Fleet
Emirates has equipped over 140 of its aircraft with the necessary onboard software to automatically share turbulence reports. Additionally, new aircraft joining the fleet in the coming years, such as the Airbus A350, Boeing 777-9, 777-8, and B787, will also be included in this program.
Captain Hassan Alhammadi, Emirates’ Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, emphasized that joining IATA’s Turbulence Aware platform and equipping pilots with the latest technologies are part of Emirates’ commitment to operational safety and passenger comfort. Alhammadi stated, “We are proud to contribute to turbulence-related data. This integration will help manage turbulence and changing weather conditions more effectively.”
Industry Collaboration for Smoother Flights
Frederic Leger, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Commercial Products and Services, noted that reducing the adverse effects of turbulence is a challenge across the industry. “The collaboration between IATA, Emirates, and Lufthansa Systems through Turbulence Aware will enable smoother and safer air travel,” Leger said.
Enhanced Navigation with Lufthansa Systems
Andreas Medlhammer, Product Owner for Pilot Chart Applications at Lufthansa Systems, highlighted that the integration of IATA Turbulence Aware data enhances the value of Lido mPilot, allowing pilots to navigate more efficiently. Medlhammer explained, “By integrating this data into Lido mPilot, Emirates can improve safety, reduce fuel consumption, and increase operational efficiency by minimizing passenger discomfort.”

Global Impact of Turbulence Aware Platform
IATA’s Turbulence Aware platform provides pilots and aviation professionals with a global, real-time, and objective source of information to manage the impact of turbulence on flights. Turbulence is a leading cause of passenger and crew injuries and can lead to higher fuel consumption. The platform aggregates anonymized turbulence data from thousands of flights worldwide, enabling pilots to choose optimal routes and maximize fuel efficiency.
Lido mPilot: Advanced Mobile Navigation Solution
Lido mPilot is a mobile navigation map application tailored to Emirates’ specific operational requirements. It provides pilots with access to terminal maps, dynamically generated route maps, and the Airport Moving Map (AMM). This system offers enhanced situational awareness for pilots, thereby improving flight safety and efficiency.
