- Emirates will further expand its retrofit program by upgrading a total of 71 A380 and B777 aircraft, bringing the total number of planes in the program to 191.
Emirates announced that it will completely refurbish 43 A380 and 28 Boeing 777 aircraft, increasing the number of planes in the retrofit program to 191.
In order to continue offering its passengers a unique travel experience, Emirates decided to expand its renewal program. The airline originally planned to refurbish 120 aircraft, including 67 A380s and 53 Boeing 777s, covering upgraded cabin interiors. While the Boeing 777 continues to be the backbone of the Emirates fleet, the A380 remains a passenger favorite.
Emirates President Sir Tim Clark said, “We are increasing our multi-billion-dollar investment in the retrofit program to include more of our A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft with state-of-the-art cabins. This clearly demonstrates our commitment to enhancing passenger experience and satisfaction with best-in-class products in every cabin. By adding more aircraft equipped with newly refurbished cabin interiors and modern color palettes with new-generation seats, we aim to ensure that our passengers experience our first-class products on both aircraft types.”
Emirates has already refurbished 22 A380 aircraft, with the first Boeing 777 aircraft scheduled to be refurbished in July of this year. Each Boeing 777 aircraft will take approximately two weeks to refurbish before entering service. The airline’s refurbishment plan includes renovating the First-Class cabin with a 1-2-1 seating layout, as well as the Business Class cabin and adding 24 of the latest Premium Economy seats, offering passengers more options to choose from.
With the addition of the Premium Economy cabin, Emirates Boeing 777 aircraft will feature a total of 332 seats across four cabin classes, including eight First Class suites, 40 Business Class seats, and 260 Economy Class seats. To accommodate the new Premium Economy class, 50 Economy class seats will be removed.
Emirates’ fleet renewal efforts are being carried out entirely at the airline’s engineering center, with over 250 personnel working continuously on the project. Additionally, 31 major partners and suppliers have established workshops both on-site and off-site to support the delivery of refurbished cabins.
Upon completion of the retrofit program with the refurbishment of the final aircraft, Emirates will have added 1,894 refreshed First Class suites, 8,104 new-generation Premium Economy seats, 11,182 enhanced Business Class seats, and 21,814 Economy Class seats to its aircraft.
Emirates is currently operating flights to New York JFK, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, London Heathrow, Sydney, Auckland, Christchurch, Melbourne, Singapore, Mumbai, Bangalore, Sao Paulo, and Dubai with A380 aircraft equipped with the newly added Premium Economy class. The airline will also begin operating flights to Osaka with this new cabin class in early June, expanding its flight services.
By February 2025, the airline plans to operate Premium Economy flights to 42 destinations with the A350, which will be added to its fleet in September of this year. Additionally, the refurbished Boeing 777s are expected to begin serving more destinations by the end of summer.
