Eclipse Aerospace has announced the start of flight tests for Daedalean AI’s visual awareness system on its Eclipse 550 twin jet. The project aims to evaluate AI-based technology for traffic conflict detection and prevention. Daedalean’s system provides enhanced traffic awareness, landing guidance, and navigation, even in environments where GPS is obstructed.
While still in the testing phase and not yet in certification, Daedalean is working with Avidyne to obtain an FAA Part 23 Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the PilotEye visual traffic detection system. Additionally, the company is pursuing an EASA STC for a similar traffic system called Ailumina Vista for Part 27 rotorcraft.
The visual awareness system operates with two onboard cameras, using Daedalean’s machine learning algorithms. This technology “leverages increased computing power to accomplish tasks previously only manageable by humans, but more efficiently.” The system’s “situational intelligence” enables it to understand the environment, predict potential threats, and respond effectively.
The Eclipse 550 jet is equipped with forward- and downward-facing cameras, with tests conducted in Albuquerque. Daedalean has stated that the focus is to “assess detection and avoidance system capabilities during critical flight stages.” While the pilot interface has not been finalized, it will be shaped by its integration with the aircraft’s avionics.
A certified system is expected to offer a 226-degree field of view through two additional nose-mounted cameras and one camera on each wingtip. These cameras will support traffic conflict detection, landing guidance, and navigation in GPS-denied environments.
