The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has lifted its travel advisory for Israel, initially issued on September 28 following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. This decision was made in the context of ongoing tensions with Iran and the effective management of civil aviation risks.
Transportation Minister Miri Regev’s discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and EU Affairs Minister Janos Boka reportedly influenced EASA’s decision, although the agency did not mention these meetings in its announcement.
Developments in the Situation
After the assassination, EASA recommended suspending flights to Israel until October 31. However, in a new statement released on Wednesday, EASA noted, “The Israeli Civil Aviation Authority has thus far proven its ability to effectively manage civil aviation risks in its airspace.” The agency emphasized that the current intensity of conflict and increasing tensions with Iran still pose risks to civil aviation. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation to determine whether the risk level has increased,” it stated.
EASA advised airlines to assess the risks for all flights to Israel and emphasized that flights should not commence or continue as planned unless all reasonable means have been verified to ensure the airspace is safe for use.
Impact on Airlines
This decision is expected to encourage some foreign airlines to resume flights to Israel. Blue Bird Airlines announced that it would restart flights to Israel immediately following EASA’s decision on Wednesday.
