Three human rights organizations have filed a lawsuit against the Dutch government for allegedly failing to comply with a ban on supplying spare parts for F-35 fighter jets to Israel. In February, an appeals court ruled that the Netherlands must halt the supply of parts to Israeli fighter jets used in attacks on the Gaza Strip, citing a “clear risk” that the aircraft could be used to violate international humanitarian law. However, the human rights groups claim that this ban has not been enforced.
One of the organizations involved, Oxfam Novib, stated, “Unfortunately, it appears that these parts are still reaching Israel through other means.” Lawyer Lisbeth Zegveld, representing the organizations in court, criticized the government, saying, “The Dutch government continues to supply parts to other countries, including the US, which is contrary to the court’s decision.”
The lawsuit highlights the ongoing tension between legal rulings aimed at upholding international humanitarian standards and the practical enforcement of such rulings by governments. Human rights groups are pushing for stricter adherence to the court’s decision, emphasizing the potential implications of non-compliance on civilian lives in conflict zones like Gaza.
