In Fullerton, California, a light aircraft crashed into a commercial building near Fullerton Municipal Airport, leaving 2 people dead and 19 others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday at 2:09 PM on Raymer Street.
Incident Details
The Van’s RV-10, a single-engine aircraft, reported an emergency landing request to the control tower shortly after takeoff. However, the plane deviated from its landing trajectory and crashed onto the roof of Michael Nicholas Designs, a furniture store. The impact ignited the warehouse, sending thick smoke billowing into the sky. Security camera footage captured the moment of impact and the subsequent fireball.
Victims and Injuries
The crash claimed the lives of Kelly Reid and her father, Pascal Reid, who were aboard the aircraft. Pascal Reid was identified as the registered owner of the plane. In the building, 19 workers were injured, with 11 transported to hospitals. Several of the injuries involved severe burns.
First responders at the scene included nurse Sunah Kim and employees of the Tac City Airsoft store. “It was chaotic,” Kim said. “We did everything we could to help.” Injured workers were triaged for immediate care.
Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched an investigation into the crash. Potential causes being examined include engine failure, fuel issues, or pilot error. The pilot reportedly lost control while attempting to return to the airport.
Aviation experts noted that Van’s RV-10 aircraft are generally reliable but emphasized the need for a thorough review as the model is considered an experimental aircraft.
