Disaster Averted at Takeoff: ANA B777 Engine Fails, Runway Shut Down

A Boeing 777-300 belonging to All Nippon Airways (ANA) aborted its takeoff for flight NH-108 from Tokyo Haneda Airport to San Francisco due to an engine failure. The aircraft, carrying 148 passengers, experienced a right engine (GE90) malfunction just before reaching takeoff speed. The plane was traveling at high speed (105 knots) on runway 34R when the takeoff was abruptly halted.

The aircraft safely decelerated and returned to the apron. Following the incident, metal debris from the engine scattered on the runway, leading to a closure of the runway for approximately 3.5 hours for cleanup. Japan’s Ministry of Transport reported damage to the right engine’s turbine blades and launched an investigation into the incident.

Thanks to the swift action, the safety of the passengers was not compromised, preventing a potential disaster. ANA officials confirmed that the affected passengers would be rerouted to San Francisco on alternative flights.
