The authorities of China, Macau and Hong Kong have issued an official Travel Warning for Japan, calling on their citizens to “avoid travelling to Japan unless necessary”. It is reported that the warning came after statements made by Japan’s new prime minister concerning Taiwan, which drew a strong reaction from China.
Airlines Implement Flexible Booking Policies for Japan Flights
Major airlines operating in mainland China have begun implementing flexible policies allowing passengers to cancel or postpone their Japan trips. In this context, Cathay Pacific has also introduced a similar policy; however, it was reported that this policy has not yet been officially announced on the company’s website.
The Chinese government has additionally requested airlines to suspend flights between the mainland and Japan until March 2026. Whether this request also applies to Cathay Pacific has not yet been clarified.
Airlines plan to downsize aircraft types or reduce flight frequencies if demand continues to decline further.
