Engine Caught Fire After Take-Off

The incident occurred just minutes after departure, with most passengers being German tourists. At 1,500 feet, the right engine failed and caught fire, an event recorded on mobile phones by locals and tourists on the island. Eyewitnesses reported hearing an explosion-like sound from the aircraft.

Calm Response from the Pilots

As the aircraft continued flying over Corfu Harbour, the pilots shut down the malfunctioning engine to prevent further damage. Corfu Airport was placed on red alert, and emergency protocols were activated. However, the crew decided to continue flying safely on one engine.

Safe Landing in Brindisi

The Boeing 757 climbed to 8,000 feet and diverted to Italy. The Düsseldorf flight was cancelled, and the aircraft landed safely at Brindisi Airport without incident.

According to German broadcaster RTL, passengers spent the night at a hotel following the emergency. The airline later announced that passengers would continue their journey to Düsseldorf later in the day.
