On Saturday, United Airlines will inaugurate three new domestic non-stop services connecting the United States most eastern state of Maine. Two of these will surpass six hours onboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8, as the flights shuttle passengers from Portland (PWM) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
A third service will also take off this weekend, with a seasonal service between Denver International Airport (DEN) and the city of Bangor (BGR). All three of these services will operate across the Northern Hemisphere summer season until mid-September. The introduction of these flights on June 27, provides a new way to travel to the region of New England.
United Airlines’ New Non-Stop Link From San Francisco To Portland
San Francisco will be connected to Portland, Maine, with a daily non-stop flight running on Saturdays to and from PWM for the summer. The service clocks in at five hours, 45 minutes eastbound, and six hours, 35 minutes on the return. The total distance between the two cities is around 2,731 miles (4,635 km). Flights will depart from San Francisco in the early morning, and a mid-morning departure from Portland for the return.
These flights will be the first time that Portland has had non-stop flights to California, and will be up there with some of the longest domestic flights in the country. Operated by the 737 MAX 8, the plane can seat between 164 and 166 passengers across two classes, Domestic First and Main Cabin.
On the same day as United launches its service from San Francisco, another non-stop link will also connect Portland to Los Angeles with another once-weekly seasonal service. The first flight will also push back on Saturday, traveling across the entire continental United States and making the return rotation in one day, with an early morning departure from Los Angeles, and a mid-morning flight for the return.
The outbound service from Los Angeles has an estimated flight time of five hours and 44 minutes, while the return journey will take six hours and 25 minutes and covers approximately 2,633 miles (4,237 km). United will be the only airline offering non-stop services to the US West Coast from Portland.
Portland International Jetport Airport (PWM), easily mistaken with Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon, is the busiest airport in the state of Maine. The airport is currently served year-round by American Airlines, Breeze Airways, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United. While seasonal services are added by all the airlines above, alongside JetBlue and Sun Country Airlines.

On the same day as Portland gains two new West Coast routes with United, the Star Alliance carrier will also commence its seasonal service connecting Denver to Bangor, the state’s third-largest city. Flights to Bangor will operate once a week on Saturdays, this time with the airline’s 737-800 aircraft.
Bangor currently sees year-round flights from Allegiant Air, American Airlines (under American Eagle), Breeze Airways, Delta Air Lines (under Delta Connection), and United Airlines (under United Express). Additional services are added with the mainline carriers aforementioned throughout the summer period.
This Saturday is set to be a momentous day for travelers to and the people of Maine, as two of its airports gain some of the longest domestic flights in the country. While only set to operate across the summer, the airline will be hoping that its western routes to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Denver are yet another reason for travelers to consider visiting the region. Flights into all three airports are adequately timed for both point-to-point and connecting passengers.
