China’s Hybrid Autonomous Transport Aircraft YH-1000S Conducts Its First Flight

The hybrid autonomous transport aircraft YH-1000S, developed by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA), has successfully completed its first flight test. Capable of taking off from short and unpaved runways, the aircraft targets the global logistics market with a payload capacity of 1,200 kilograms.

A strategic step in the low-altitude economy

As the share of autonomous systems in the global supply chain rapidly increases, China’s aviation industry has taken a new step within the scope of the “low-altitude economy.” Developed by CAAA and targeting international markets, the YH-1000S is positioned as an export-oriented platform.

The new model stands out as a capacity-enhanced and commercially optimised version of the YH-1000, which made its first flight in May 2025 and was developed for the domestic Chinese market.

Capability to take off from dirt and grass runways

The YH-1000S stands out with its STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capability, which increases flexibility in logistics operations. Thanks to its high-power hybrid propulsion system, the aircraft can take off and land without the need for conventional airport infrastructure, including:

  • Compacted dirt runways
  • Secondary roads
  • Grassy terrain

Thanks to its modular structure, ski kits for snowy terrain or float systems for water operations can be integrated into the platform. These features make the YH-1000S a critical solution for rapid response to disaster areas and cargo delivery to hard-to-access locations.

1,500-kilometre range, 1,200-kilogram payload

According to technical data shared by CGTN, hybrid engine technology has significantly enhanced the aircraft’s performance. The key technical specifications of the YH-1000S are as follows:

  • Range: 1,500 kilometres
  • Maximum payload capacity: 1,200 kilograms

For efficiency in cargo operations, the aircraft has been designed to load and unload cargo from the front or to drop cargo from the lower section.

Multi-purpose use and commercialisation process

Launched in June 2024, the YH-1000S programme reached operational maturity in a short period of time. Having completed ground taxi tests in January 2025, the platform was developed for medium-altitude logistics missions.

The twin-engine design and proven avionics systems derived from the CH drone series are among the elements that enhance the aircraft’s reliability.

Project officials state that the YH-1000S can be used not only for cargo transportation, but also for missions such as:

  • Ocean surveillance
  • Maritime inspection
  • Weather modification

“Technical groundwork is ready for commercial operations”

Speaking to Global Times, the project team leader stated that the verification flights carried out have provided the necessary technical infrastructure for commercial operations, adding: “In order to give momentum to the developing low-altitude economy in western China, we will continue trial operations within the framework of the required policy approvals.”
