An Airbus A330 passenger aircraft belonging to China Southern Airlines, which had taken off from Shanghai en route to Shenzhen, struck a flock of birds during takeoff. The aircraft, whose nose radome was torn off, returned and made a safe landing following a decision taken in the air.
Details of the Incident
The Airbus A330-300 passenger aircraft registered B-1062 in the China Southern Airlines fleet encountered a serious hazard while taking off from Shanghai to operate flight CZ-3554. Shortly after departure, the aircraft entered a dense flock of birds and was subjected to multiple consecutive impacts.
It was reported that during the incident, which occurred at an altitude of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 feet), the radome located in the nose section of the aircraft completely separated. Following the damage, the crew initiated standard emergency procedures.
Critical Decision by the Pilots
After the incident, the flight crew decided to abort the route and return for safety reasons. Approximately 20 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft diverted back to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and carried out an uneventful landing on runway 18L.
Authorities stated that no injuries were reported in the incident. While passengers on board were safely evacuated, technical teams initiated an inspection to assess the damage.
Flight Completed with Delay
Following the incident, a different aircraft was assigned for the Shenzhen flight. The flight, operated with a Boeing 777-300 registered B-20AC, was completed with a delay of approximately 4 hours compared to its scheduled time.
It was learned that the damaged Airbus A330 remained on the ground for hours after landing and that technical inspections were ongoing.
