Amid rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, the People’s Republic of China introduced two new fighter jets on the birthday of its founder Mao Zedong. It was announced that China’s J-36 and Shenyang aircraft have completed their maiden flights.
J-36: China’s Sixth-Generation Fighter Aircraft?
The J-36, notable for its three-engine and tailless design, has been described by many experts as a sixth-generation fighter jet. The lack of an existing sixth-generation fighter jet worldwide makes these claims even more intriguing.

Aviation expert Bill Sweetman pointed out that the J-36 could rival U.S. aircraft in terms of supersonic speed, stealth, and heavy payload capacity. Sweetman emphasized that the J-36 has overcome the difficulties that the J-20 experienced in long-range targeting and weapons load.
According to Sweetman, the J-36 also has superior air-to-air missile capabilities, which could challenge U.S. air superiority. He noted, “We might have a problem now,” highlighting that China’s new development could pose a strategic threat to the West.
First Sightings in China and Military Statements
Residents of Chengdu, China, reported seeing the J-36 and Shenyang jets in the sky on the morning of December 26. The footage shared online was analyzed by international experts. Officials from the Chinese military confirmed to the South China Morning Post that the aircraft are indeed new-generation.
New Amphibious Assault Ship: Sichuan
In addition to its air force advancements, China has also made significant strides with its naval forces. The Sichuan, touted as the world’s largest amphibious assault ship, features an electromagnetic launch system, which enhances its ability to deploy both unmanned aerial vehicles and combat aircraft more effectively.
