Bullet marks were detected on the exterior of an American Airlines aircraft flying from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami. After landing in Florida, the plane was immediately taken out of service due to damage identified during a routine inspection.
Statement from the Airline
In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, American Airlines said the aircraft was “immediately taken out of service for further inspection and repair.” The company added that the investigation is ongoing in cooperation with all relevant authorities. It was reported that the plane was later sent to Dallas, Texas, for maintenance and repair. The airline’s headquarters are located in Fort Worth.
Investigation Launched
According to ABC News, Colombian authorities have officially opened an investigation into the incident. Officials are considering the possibility that a criminal organization may be involved, although no definitive conclusions have been reached. PEOPLE magazine reported that it contacted the Colombian National Police for more information on the matter.
Flight Traffic Details
Flight data shows that the aircraft in question flew from Miami to Medellín on Sunday evening and returned to Miami on Monday morning. The same plane later operated a flight to Dallas later in the day.
