For obvious reasons, British Airways is the largest European operator flying to the US, based on routes, flights, passenger traffic, and other metrics. In the 12 months to March 2026, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) shows that 7.5 million round-trip passengers were carried. Lufthansa was next, with 5.5 million.
BA’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio shows that 28 US routes are planned in the peak summer month of July. 26 are from London Heathrow Airport (LHR), and two are from London Gatwick Airport (LGW). Depending on the specific day, 50 or 51 daily departures are available.
On July 21, the oneworld member will take off from the UK’s busiest airport to the ever-popular Orlando International Airport (MCO). A very short-term operation, the final departure of 2026 is down for August 29. This unusual setup is for one reason: UK school holidays and the consequent increased demand. The launch is bound to make the weekly celebratory new routes articles (see last week’s edition).
Running three times weekly, the 272-seat Boeing 777-200ER will be deployed. Unsurprisingly, this configuration does not have first class. However, it does feature new Club World suites. It is BA’s second lowest-capacity Triple Seven layout. As the following table shows, BA205 will leave LHR at 8:20 AM, which is unusually early for transatlantic services. It is BA’s joint-earliest departure, timed with the first outbound service of the day to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
It will be the first time BA has flown LHR-MCO outside the pandemic years. It previously did so between 2021 and 2022, when the DOT shows 166,815 round-trip passengers were transported and 81.8% of the available seats were filled. BA mainly serves MCO from LGW on higher-capacity and lower-premium so-called LGW-configured 777-200ERs. It’ll have two daily flights from the UK’s second-busiest airport to MCO in July.

It is common to compare how things have changed between two specific time periods. Comparing BA’s US network in July 2025 with what is available in the same peak month this year highlights multiple differences, far beyond LHR-MCO. For example, BA has ceased flying from LGW to both JFK and Las Vegas; they’ve consolidated at LHR.
On April 19, 2026, BA introduced the first-ever service from LHR to St. Louis. The launch meant that St. Louis had London flights after an absence of 20+ years, when American Airlines flew to LGW (the route was inherited from TWA). BA returned to DFW in October 2025, having last flown there in May last year. Miami now has two daily flights, doubled compared to July last year. This was because fellow oneworld member and transatlantic joint-venture partner American Airlines has halved its MIA offering.
Due to ending LGW-JFK, BA increased LHR-JFK service, while LHR-LAS is now flown 10 times weekly, up from daily. There are various other changes, although they are less significant. For example, two daily flights each day of the week (rather than nearly each day) are now available from LHR to Austin and San Diego. Cincinnati’s frequency has risen from five to six weekly departures.
As identified in March, BA’s LGW to Tampa International Airport (TPA) service had the carrier’s lowest load factor across the airline’s full US network. On October 25, when northern airlines switch to winter schedules based on IATA slot seasons, this route will switch to LHR for the first time in 40+ years.
The route from LHR will operate five times weekly on first-class-equipped, 256-seat 787-10. It is quite surprising that the airline’s most premium cabin will be available. It’ll be down from a daily offering on the 332-seat and 336-seat economy-heavy 777-200ER from LGW, which should help improve loads and yields. Flying from LHR may make BA more competitive against Virgin Atlantic, which operates LHR-TPA daily. However, BA’s lower frequency won’t.
