Bombardier has confirmed the authenticity of a photo circulating on social media that shows a damaged Global 5500, revealing that the incident actually took place at its new facility in Mississauga, Ontario. However, the company has not disclosed any details about what caused the accident.
A representative of the aircraft manufacturer told GlobalAir.com that the incident occurred on May 9th in the ground testing area of the Bombardier Aircraft Assembly Center and that no crew members were injured.
The company verified the accuracy of the photo, which shows the aircraft’s nose cone crushed and punctured by what appears to be an electrical pole and the plane resting against a broken fence and a concrete barrier.
Bombardier has launched an independent internal investigation. The representative stated, “We are meticulously gathering information. Bombardier’s ultimate priorities remain the safety and quality of its aircraft.”
The preliminary investigation concluded that no fleet-wide measures were necessary for the aircraft manufacturer.
The incident has not impacted production activities at Bombardier’s new facility, where it recently transitioned as the sole aircraft manufacturing site in the region.
This move coincides with Bombardier’s shift in focus primarily towards corporate jet efforts, as the company also introduced a new logo and other branding elements last month.
The Bombardier Global 5500 entered the private jet market in 2020. The large-cabin business aircraft can complete trans-Atlantic flights from Eastern USA with a maximum range of 5,900 nautical miles. The state-of-the-art jet can accommodate up to 16 passengers and transport them to their destinations at a maximum speed of 516 knots.
