U.S.-based aerospace giant Boeing is facing a new reputational crisis following the in-orbit failure of a communications satellite it designed. The satellite operator, Intelsat, confirmed that the IS-33e satellite, which provided services across Europe, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific regions, has been “completely lost.” Intelsat stated that they are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident alongside Boeing and relevant government agencies.
This satellite loss comes at a challenging time for Boeing, which is already grappling with significant issues. Strike and the New CEO’s Tough Challenge
Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who took the helm in August, is facing significant hurdles. A machinist strike involving 33,000 workers at Boeing’s assembly plants in the Seattle area has entered its fifth week, severely disrupting aircraft production. The striking workers are protesting changes to their retirement plans. In response, Boeing has offered a deal that includes a 35% wage increase, bonuses, and some retirement benefits.
The outcome of the union’s vote on this proposal is seen as a critical moment for Ortberg’s leadership. The resolution of the strike and the potential ramp-up of Boeing’s 737 Max production are expected to have a significant impact on the company’s future financial performance.
Profitability Struggles Since 2018
