At Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport in Barranquilla, Colombia, the airport was temporarily closed after the landing gear of an Aerosucre-operated Boeing 727-227 cargo aircraft collapsed during an emergency landing. No injuries were reported among the crew.
According to information obtained from officials, the incident occurred after the Aerosucre Airlines cargo aircraft was forced to return to the airport for an emergency due to a technical issue. During the landing, a malfunction occurred in the landing gear, causing it to collapse on the runway.
Causes Under Investigation
While the exact cause of the initial emergency and the landing gear failure has not yet been determined, it was reported that a technical examination and an official investigation process have been launched. Aviation authorities stated that the factors leading to the incident would be analysed in detail.
Thanks to the coordinated and rapid response of the airport fire brigade and ground handling personnel during the landing, a potentially greater risk was averted. Officials particularly emphasised that there were no injuries among the crew members on board the aircraft.
Airport Temporarily Closed
Colombia’s Civil Aviation Authority (Aerocivil) confirmed that Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport was temporarily closed following the incident as part of safety measures.
In a statement issued by Aerocivil, it was said: “Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport will remain temporarily closed in order to inspect any potential damage to the airport infrastructure, including affected runway lights.”
Officials reported that the airport would be reopened to flight traffic after assessing whether there was any structural damage to the runway and after repairing the malfunctioning lighting systems.
