Khartoum International Airport, controlled by the army in Sudan’s capital, has resumed operations with the landing of its first civilian aircraft after 921 days.
Khartoum International Airport, which had been overshadowed by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, has reopened to civilian flights after a long hiatus. In an announcement made on the airport’s official page, it was stated that “a Badr Airlines aircraft has landed at Khartoum International Airport.”
The statement noted that this landing marked the airport’s official reopening and the resumption of air traffic in the capital. The development is considered a significant milestone in the recovery of Sudan’s aviation sector.
The Badr Airlines plane, which departed from Port Sudan carrying passengers, landed in Khartoum after 921 days and returned shortly thereafter to the eastern city.
The Airport Suffered Heavy Damage During the Clashes
Khartoum International Airport was among the first areas affected when fighting broke out in Sudan. Due to the intense clashes that began in April 2023, the airport sustained severe damage and was forced to suspend operations.
Clashes Continue in Sudan
Since 15 April 2023, Sudan has been witnessing an internal conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting has displaced more than 14 million people within and outside the country.
In recent months, the army has reportedly regained control over the capital Khartoum and central regions, while the RSF has shifted its focus to the western areas. However, army-controlled regions continue to face occasional drone attacks.
