Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has expressed that Azerbaijan expects an official admission from the Russian Federation regarding the plane crash that deeply affected public opinion in December 2024. Aliyev made the statement on 20 July during the 3rd Global Media Forum in the city of Shusha.
Leading media organisations from Romania and Bulgaria interpreted President Aliyev’s remarks as a call for regional security, international law, and transparency.
Major outlets such as AGEPRES (Romania’s national news agency), Mediafax, Evenimentul Zilei, and Bulgaria’s BTA and 24 Chasa highlighted Aliyev’s statements in their headlines. According to these reports, Aliyev pointed to Russia’s role in the crash and stated that Azerbaijan demands full clarification and an official assumption of responsibility by Moscow.
“International Law Must Be Upheld”
According to Romanian and Bulgarian media commentary, President Aliyev’s appeal is seen as a significant step not only for Azerbaijan but also for the security of the Black Sea and South Caucasus regions. The regional press underscored that this call emphasises the importance of accountability within the framework of international norms.
The statement also noted that Azerbaijan has been meticulously investigating the details and evidence surrounding the plane crash, stressing that determining responsibility is not only a political necessity but also a humanitarian obligation.
