A critical step has been taken for Aydın Airport to open to international flights. During the meeting between the Ministry delegation and Aydın Metropolitan Municipality, the details of the project and its impact on the regional economy were discussed.
Visit from the Ministry delegation to Aydın Metropolitan Municipality
Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu hosted the delegation from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. The visit was attended by Director General of Infrastructure Investments Dr. Yalçın Eyigün, Deputy Director General Muhammed Kerem Yeğnidemir, and 3rd Regional Director Hacer Eke.
Opening Aydın Airport to international flights on the agenda
During the meeting, the draft project prepared to open Aydın Airport to international commercial flights was discussed in detail. It was stated that the project was initiated under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the current stage of the ongoing work was evaluated.
Director General of Infrastructure Investments Eyigün announced that the technical teams have completed the ground survey studies on site, stating that an important threshold has been passed in the engineering infrastructure of the project.

A strategic move for regional development
The opening of Aydın Airport to international flights is seen as a critical step not only in terms of passenger transportation, but also for tourism, agricultural exports, and logistics activities. Its proximity to major tourism destinations in the Aegean Region is among the factors that increase the airport’s potential.
According to experts, actively opening the airport to international traffic could diversify airline competition in the region and create a new hub for low-cost carriers seeking alternative destinations. This could contribute to strengthening domestic connections and to a more balanced growth of the regional economy.
Çerçioğlu: “We are following every stage”
Mayor Çerçioğlu emphasized that the investment in question will make significant contributions to Aydın’s economic development and said:
“The opening of Aydın Airport to international commercial flights will be an important development for our province. I would like to thank our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for leading the initiation of this process. We are followers and supporters of every investment that will contribute to the present and future of our city. We will continue to work in cooperation with all institutions and organizations for our Aydın and our fellow citizens.”
Aviation perspective: Is a new regional gateway opening?
In recent years, the reactivation of regional airports in Türkiye and their integration into international traffic has become one of the key topics of civil aviation policies. The Aydın Airport project has also stood out as part of this strategy.
If the project is completed, it is aimed to balance part of the traffic load on İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport and to diversify tourism-focused charter operations. However, the realization of these goals will depend not only on the completion of infrastructure investments but also on the commercial interest of airlines and sustainable passenger demand.
