NATO has decided to deploy Turkey’s MEROPS (Multi-Spectral Extended Range Optical Surveillance) aerial monitoring system to Poland and Romania to enhance its early warning capabilities against Russia’s increasing unmanned aerial vehicle threats.
Developed by ASELSAN and introduced in 2022, MEROPS can be integrated with both helicopters and drones. The system can detect hostile elements even under challenging conditions such as clouds and dust, strengthening NATO’s defense capacity on the eastern flank. According to the German news agency DPA, training on the system’s operation is planned to begin next week with support from Ukraine.
Strategic Contribution to Early Warning Capabilities
Analysts say this move will enhance NATO’s early warning abilities, allowing a faster response to Russia’s UAV threats. The decision also highlights the growing role of optical surveillance systems, alongside radars and fighter jets, in Eastern Europe’s air defense strategy.

Fixed-wing platforms like HÜRKUŞ, ANKA, AKSUNGUR, TB2, AKINCI Attack helicopters such as ATAK II
It also provides advanced capabilities including distance measurement with laser systems, guidance, countermeasures, and active imaging.
International Showcases
MEROPS was also displayed at the 2022 Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition in South Africa. The system, which allowed participants to experience its high imaging quality, drew significant attention when exhibited alongside the Rooivalk attack helicopter.
