A Flydubai aircraft parked on the apron at Velana International Airport, the busiest airport in the Maldives, was damaged after being hit by a fuel tanker. In the incident reported by the aviation news agency Aviators Maldives, it was stated that the aircraft’s wing structure had been damaged.
According to the initial assessment by officials, there was no fuel leakage and no one was injured. As per safety procedures, the aircraft has been grounded until repairs are completed and compliance with regulatory standards is verified.
Aviators Maldives stated the following in its announcement:
“The aircraft will remain on the ground until repairs are completed and regulatory standards are met.”
Need for Improved Apron Safety on the Agenda
The incident has brought apron safety back into focus amid the heavy operational traffic at Velana Airport. Aviation experts highlighted the following points to prevent such accidents:
- Strengthening apron safety procedures
- Increasing driver training
- Building stronger communication networks among ground handling staff
- Effective use of vehicle limiters when approaching aircraft
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has not yet made any official statement regarding the incident.
