During the Eid al-Adha holiday, Antalya saw a record number of visitors. Antalya Airport handled 4,300 flight operations, while 1,020,000 vehicles and 7,168 passenger buses entered the city via road. Nurettin Şengül, Head of Transportation Planning for Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, assessed the traffic congestion experienced during the holiday. Şengül stated, “The holiday coinciding with the end of the school term and the announcement of a nine-day holiday led to a massive influx from all over Turkey. A total of 1,020,000 vehicles entered Antalya through all entry points. Assuming an average of 3 people per vehicle, these vehicles brought approximately 3 million visitors.”
Record Traffic at the Airport: 4,300 Planes Landed
Şengül mentioned that bus terminals saw 7,168 buses in operation, adding, “We witnessed a movement of nearly 100,000 people at our terminals. At Antalya Airport, approximately 4,300 flights occurred during the eve and throughout the holiday. Nearly 140,000 vehicles entered and exited the airport to transport passengers to their accommodations. Since the eve of the holiday, nearly 4 million people arrived in the city.”
Weekend Congestion Crippled the City
Şengül noted that the same traffic flow started in the departure direction towards the end of the holiday, stating, “Our personnel monitored the process at 125 smart intersections throughout the holiday. Measures were taken to reduce congestion and prevent citizens from waiting on the roads. We worked in coordination with other institutions and organizations to minimize this congestion. As the holiday ended, the return of private sector employees began. The departure traffic won’t be as heavy as the arrival traffic. We expect the main congestion on Saturday and Sunday.”
Return Journey Advisory: Be Patient, Follow the Rules
Addressing those who started their return journey, mostly over the weekend, Şengül urged caution and adherence to traffic rules. “We ask our returning citizens to follow traffic rules. In previous years, we suffered many losses. We want them to be patient on the return journey, take more breaks, and reach their loved ones and homes safely,” he said.
