While the Fourth of July has passed, celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary are continuing in destinations across the country, from coastal towns to historic hangars.
Step Back in Time to 1607
Few destinations offer as many connections to America’s early history as Virginia Beach. At the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, the Cape Henry Lighthouse marks the site where English settlers first landed in 1607 and is one of the nation’s earliest federally funded public works, authorized by President George Washington in 1791. Visitors can also tour colonial landmarks including the Adam Thoroughgood House and Francis Land House, which provide a glimpse into life in early America. Later this year, history takes to the skies during the Military Aviation Museum’s Warbirds Over the Beach event (Oct. 3-4), when restored World War II aircraft return to the museum’s 130-acre grass airfield for flight demonstrations.
History Takes Flight
Destin-Fort Walton Beach offers several ways for travelers to explore America’s military and transportation history as the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations continue. The Florida Panhandle destination is home to sites such as the Air Force Armament Museum, the Women Veterans Monument at Veterans’ Park and the Okaloosa County Veterans Memorial. This fall, the Emerald Coast Regional Mustang Club will host the Wheels & Wings America 250 Car Show on Oct. 17 at the Air Force Armament Museum, where visitors can view classic and modern vehicles while also touring the museum’s collection of military aircraft and exhibits.
Hit the Road
Providence’s luxury boutique hotel, The Beatrice, has partnered with Hartmann to launch the Rhode to Everywhere package in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Available through Aug. 31, the limited-time offer includes a stay at the hotel along with a Hartmann luggage set, road trip-inspired amenities and other travel essentials designed to celebrate the spirit of American travel and craftsmanship.
