American Airlines Boeing 777 Breaks Sound Barrier

An American Airlines Boeing 777 exceeded the speed of sound, cutting its flight time from New York JFK Airport to London Heathrow by an hour. The transatlantic flight, which took place in October last year, reached London in just six hours and seven minutes. During the flight, the aircraft achieved a speed of 778 miles per hour. According to NASA, the speed of sound at sea level under standard conditions is approximately 761 miles per hour.

Weather and Jet Stream Influence

The reduction in flight time was attributed to weather conditions, particularly the jet stream. The Meteorology Office explains that the jet stream is a core of strong winds blowing from west to east about five to seven miles above the Earth’s surface. A rapid cooling period last autumn helped accelerate these winds. CNN meteorologist Sara Tonks noted that a cold snap in the United States increased the temperature differential between America and the Atlantic Ocean, thereby boosting the jet stream’s speed.

Other Fast Flights

The American Airlines flight was not the only one to experience unusually swift travel last autumn. In November, an Emirates flight from Dallas to Dubai arrived 57 minutes early, reaching a speed of 675 miles per hour. On the same day, a Delta flight from Los Angeles to London reduced its flight time by an hour after reaching a speed of 760 miles per hour.

Distinction Between Ground Speed and Airspeed

CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam clarified that ground speed measures how fast an aircraft travels relative to a fixed point on the ground, while airspeed measures its speed relative to the air in which it is flying. In both cases, these flights saved time and money.

Boeing 777 Speed Compared to Other Aircraft

While the Boeing 777 operates at subsonic speeds, it is slower compared to supersonic jets like the Concorde. The Concorde could fly between London and New York in about three hours, reaching speeds of 1,354 miles per hour. A supersonic aircraft currently being tested by NASA could reduce the travel time between these cities to just under four hours. Lockheed Martin’s unmanned hypersonic aircraft, the SR-72, has the potential to become the fastest aircraft ever developed, capable of reaching speeds of 4,000 miles per hour.
