AirAsia X Aircraft Lands at Wrong Airport

AirAsia X’s Kuala Lumpur–Seoul flight was diverted to Gimpo due to bad weather at Incheon. Passengers were left shocked after a wrong airport announcement; the airline will revise its communication protocols.

AirAsia X Passenger Uproar: Wrong Announcements and No Information

On 13 August 2025, AirAsia X (D7) flight D7506, which departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and was scheduled to land at Incheon International Airport (ICN), was unexpectedly diverted to Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport (GMP). The aircraft reached its intended destination more than two hours later than planned.

The airline stated that the diversion was due to adverse weather conditions and heavy air traffic at Incheon. However, passengers were left surprised when, after landing, an announcement suggested they had arrived at Incheon. It was alleged that even the crew learned of the change only after landing.

AirAsia X explained that during the Seoul approach, air traffic control made the decision to divert to Gimpo due to the risk of fuel reserves dropping below safe levels. The company emphasised that the captain landed to refuel in line with standard operating procedures.

Some passengers complained about the lack of drinking water while waiting on the ground and the absence of proper communication. The aircraft later departed from Gimpo the same night, eventually arriving in Incheon over four hours late.

AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said, “Safety is our top priority. An unforeseen diversion was made due to adverse weather conditions.” The airline acknowledged the communication mishap, announced it would review internal announcement protocols, and confirmed passengers would receive travel vouchers.
