Cappadocia University successfully completed its first test flight between Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa to establish air corridors specifically for drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This development is considered a significant step in Turkey’s aviation and technological infrastructure.
In aviation, just as there are designated routes for vehicles on land, airplanes in the air, and ships at sea, air corridors will be created for drones and UAVs to use in intra-city and inter-city flights within determined coordinates. These corridors will provide a safe airspace for drones by preventing unauthorized flights.
Cappadocia University Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Ali Karasar announced that the first test flight between Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa was successfully completed. In his statement, Karasar said, “This has been a topic of discussion for years. It will inevitably happen in the future. Drones used for healthcare and cargo purposes are now part of our lives. Nowadays, drones are being intensively used for defense purposes. It is clear that drones will play a very important role in our daily lives. We envision a future where cargo, blood, and first aid will be delivered by air. Pilot applications are being conducted in various countries worldwide. Turkey is one of the leading countries in the use of UAVs. We are one of the first countries in Europe to enact UAV legislation. We have established regulations for UAVs over 500 grams.”
Rector Karasar also provided information about the work carried out at Cappadocia University, stating, “We have a technical infrastructure to ensure that UAVs do not collide in the air and do not damage residential areas. We conducted an excellent study using Türk Telekom’s base stations to track UAVs from the air and establish air highways. We are also turning this study into a scientific publication. Our first pilot test was conducted between the village of Mustafapaşa and Ürgüp. The test flight was successfully completed. We have introduced an innovative approach to controlling UAVs under 300 meters in the air using base stations. I hope that in the coming years, these UAVs will be actively used throughout Turkey.”
