Following the warning issued by European aircraft manufacturer Airbus regarding safety issues identified in A321 models, many airlines initiated an urgent update process after similar risks were assessed for the A320 series. Within this scope, the Airbus A320 aircraft used by Pope Leo XIV, who arrived in Istanbul, was also included among the models requiring a software installation.
In the technical warning published by Airbus in coordination with aviation authorities, airlines were requested to temporarily ground their A320neo and A321neo aircraft and activate software and hardware protections due to the detected risk. Following this decision, many companies took their aircraft out of service and began update procedures.
A Special Technical Team Sent to Istanbul for the Pope’s Aircraft
Among the aircraft included in the scope of the update is the Airbus A320 that brought Pope Leo XIV to Istanbul. To carry out the necessary procedures, aircraft technicians and spare computer hardware suitable for ITA Airways’ A320neo model were brought from Rome to Istanbul today.
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni stated that the updates would be carried out in line with the emergency directive issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and announced that after the installation is completed, the Pope will depart from Istanbul to Beirut tomorrow.
