IGA Istanbul Airport became Europe’s busiest airport with 1,644 daily flights. Surpassing Frankfurt by 253 flights, IGA maintained its leading position at the top.
IGA Istanbul Airport rose to the top of European air traffic rankings amid increased passenger mobility ahead of the Eid al-Adha holiday.
According to Eurocontrol data, 1,558 flights were operated at the airport on Friday, while the number increased to 1,644 on Saturday.
With this figure, IGA Istanbul Airport once again secured the title of Europe’s busiest airport.
253-Flight Gap Over Frankfurt
On the same day, Frankfurt Airport, which ranked second in Europe, handled 1,391 flights.
IGA Istanbul Airport maintained its leadership in Europe by outperforming Frankfurt with a gap of 253 flights.
Holiday Rush Increased Terminal Activity
Due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, passengers traveling domestically and internationally created heavy traffic at the airport.
Especially during morning and evening peak hours, passenger density increased significantly at terminal entrances, security checkpoints, and check-in areas.
THY Added 365 Extra Flights
Turkish Airlines announced that it had scheduled a total of 365 additional flights to meet rising passenger demand.
With these extra services, Istanbul Airport is considered to have further strengthened its position as one of Europe’s most important air traffic hubs.

IGA management and related operational units announced that comprehensive measures had been implemented to ensure passengers could travel safely and comfortably.
The airport introduced measures including:
