Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and European Council President Charles Michel Discuss Kyrgyzstan’s EU Flight Ban
During his working visit to Belgium, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov met with European Council President Charles Michel in Brussels. The discussion focused on Kyrgyzstan and its airlines being included on the EU Aviation Safety List in 2006 due to non-compliance with flight safety standards, resulting in the ban on Kyrgyz aircraft flying to EU countries since then.
President Japarov emphasized his personal commitment to resolving this issue, noting that Kyrgyzstan has rebuilt four airports in the past two years and plans to construct a new airport in Jalal-Abad. He also mentioned that a special decree was issued to improve the operations of the State Civil Aviation Agency and allocate the necessary funds. Since 2023, the State Civil Aviation Agency has been working closely with the EU Commission, providing all required documentation.
In the meeting, Japarov stated that Kyrgyzstan and the EU are on the verge of a new level of cooperation. He mentioned that a special donor platform was recently established in Vienna, in cooperation with the World Bank, to support the construction of one of Kyrgyzstan’s largest projects, the Kambarata-1 hydroelectric power plant, and invited the EU to participate in the project in line with the “Global Gateway” strategy.
Highlighting the importance of cooperation in the rare metals sector, Japarov noted that Kyrgyzstan possesses 17 critical metals of interest to European countries, including europium, gadolinium, niobium, and lithium. He called on potential investors and financial institutions to collaborate on projects involving these rare metals.
Charles Michel reiterated his commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation based on the principles of democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and economic interaction. He stated that future cooperation with Kyrgyzstan would continue in key areas such as energy, clean technologies, and transportation.
