Is Germany Defenceless Against Hostile Drones? Experts Sound the Alarm

German aerospace experts say the country is vulnerable to drone threats. BDLI urges the government to take legal, technical, and strategic action. Full details here.

Leading experts in Germany’s aerospace industry have warned that the country lacks adequate defence systems against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs/drones). A warning letter from the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) to the government highlights serious deficiencies in legal frameworks and technological infrastructure.

Recent weeks have seen a spike in illegal drone activity, particularly around the Manching military airbase, exposing the inadequacy of existing security systems. Experts say that Germany still lacks a coordinated national defence strategy against drone threats.

BDLI: “Every Day of Delay Increases Security Vulnerabilities”

Marie-Christine von Hahn, Executive Director of BDLI, made the following statement:

“Hostile drones being able to intercept signals from government and police systems undermines Germany’s identity as a democratic state governed by the rule of law. This is not only a military threat—it could have political and societal consequences as well.”

Von Hahn urged the government to take immediate action in three key areas:

  • Updating legal regulations

  • Establishing coordination among government agencies

  • Rapid deployment of advanced defence technologies

Solution: Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA)

Among the BDLI’s recommendations is the accelerated adoption of Cooperative Combat Aircraft (CCA) systems—technology already in advanced stages in the United States. Experts argue that acquiring and integrating these systems could significantly strengthen Germany’s defence capabilities.

Security Gap Becoming a National Risk

German experts warn that without decisive action, the country’s strategic and military infrastructure will remain at high risk. While BDLI has issued similar warnings in the past, this latest letter has sparked greater public attention.
