The US has officially approved the sale of 32 F-35A Lightning II fighter jets to Romania, under a massive $7.2 billion deal. In addition to the aircraft, the agreement includes Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, and various other equipment.
Romania Expands Its Military Objectives
This step, taken in line with Romania’s goal of modernizing its air force, will significantly boost the country’s defense capabilities. Romania’s National Supreme Defense Council, chaired by President Klaus Iohannis, had approved the aircraft purchase in April 2023. At the time, the deal was estimated at $6.5 billion, but the cost rose to $7.2 billion as the scope expanded.
Deliveries to Begin in 2030
The deal will be carried out under the US Foreign Military Sales program and will come into effect with approval from the US Department of State. In addition to receiving 32 F-35A aircraft, Romania plans to establish a third squadron of 16 aircraft in the future. The first deliveries are expected to start in 2030.
Romania Will Become the Third Country with a Fifth-Generation Fleet
With this agreement, Romania will become the third Eastern European country to acquire fifth-generation F-35 jets, following Poland and the Czech Republic. The F-35A aircraft, produced by Lockheed Martin, have advanced radar and stealth capabilities, making them effective against modern air defense systems. Romanian officials eagerly anticipate receiving the country’s first F-35 in 2030.
