Turkish Airlines has one of the world’s most unusual Boeing 777s in its fleet, and the aircraft continues to attract attention for reasons that go far beyond its all-white appearance. Registered as TC-LKF, the jet stands apart from every other 777-300ER operated by the airline thanks to an ultra-dense 492-seat layout. Whilst Turkish Airlines operates in excess of 40 777s, of which this airframe is a part, this aircraft effectively sits in a category of its own.
Its story is equally unconventional. Rather than arriving directly from Boeing or joining the fleet in a standard configuration, TC-LKF came with a complex history involving previous operators, periods of inactivity, and a cabin designed for maximum passenger volume. The result is an aircraft that feels less like a traditional flagship widebody and more like a specialized capacity tool that Turkish Airlines inherited and put to work.
Most 777-300ERs are built around balancing premium demand with economy capacity. Turkish Airlines’ standard configurations for the 777-300ER feature either 49 Business and 300 Economy seats (349 total), while the second features 28 Business and 372 Economy seats (400 total).
The aircraft features just 14 business class seats and an enormous 478 economy seats, creating a total capacity of 492 passengers. That figure is exceptionally high for a 777. The aircraft’s 492-seat layout is also notable because it approaches the capacity of many Airbus A380 operators despite the 777-300ER being a smaller aircraft. For example, British Airways configures its A380s with 469 seats, while Qantas operates examples with 485 seats, meaning Turkish Airlines’ lone 777 actually carries more passengers than those superjumbos.
This capacity makes TC-LKF an outlier not just within Turkish Airlines’ fleet, but among 777 operators worldwide. Airlines typically standardize cabin layouts to simplify maintenance, crew training, and scheduling. Operating a single aircraft with a dramatically different configuration creates complexity, but it also gives Turkish Airlines access to a unique high-capacity asset when needed, without the added complexity of significantly increasing aircraft size or type, such as by operating an A380.
Turkish Airlines acquired its first 777-300ER all the way back in 2010. In a press release from the airline at the time, Marlin Dailey, vice president of Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said:
“The 777-300ER is a great choice for Turkish, as the 777’s high efficiency, spacious cabin, and industry-leading reliability combine to help the airline provide a superior passenger experience.”
A Long Journey Before Joining Turkish Airlines
TC-LKF’s path into the Turkish Airlines fleet was far from straightforward. The aircraft was originally delivered to Emirates in 2007, where it operated with a conventional long-haul cabin and spent over a decade in standard widebody service. It later moved to Russian charter airline Royal Flight, where it was heavily reconfigured into a high-density layout.
Operators like Royal Flight typically focus on seasonal charter demand, often working with tour operators and using aircraft in a flexible, high-utilization model rather than stable scheduled networks. Following market changes and wider disruptions affecting Russian aviation, the aircraft spent extended periods in storage and inactive status, moving in and out of service without consistent operations.
The aircraft was then in storage for long periods in Spain and Turkey due to disruptions in the Russian market before Turkish Airlines acquired the aircraft in 2024. The operator inherited both the dense cabin and its unusual operational history. Entering service largely unchanged and still wearing a mostly white fuselage, the aircraft became an immediate outlier within the fleet and one of the most distinctive examples of a high-capacity Boeing 777 in passenger use.
They involve four airlines and eight domestic routes.
Unsurprisingly, TC-LKF’s recent deployment patterns show that Turkish Airlines has largely used the aircraft on routes where sheer capacity matters more than offering a premium-heavy cabin experience. FlightRadar24 records from early June show the 777 frequently operating between Istanbul Airport (IST) and Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB), with surprisingly short flight times for such a large aircraft. On June 16, TK2303 from ADB to IST operated for just 44 minutes, while on June 2 and May 30, TK2312 and TK2332 from IST to ADB each took only 47–49 minutes.
The aircraft has also regularly appeared on flights between Istanbul Airport (IST) and Antalya Airport (AYT), another major high-volume market where the aircraft can complete sectors in under an hour. On June 10, TK2424 from IST to AYT operated in 57 minutes, while TK2430 on June 4 completed the route in only 53 minutes. Even TK2422 on May 31 flew from IST to AYT in just 50 minutes, meaning passengers were boarding one of the world’s highest-capacity Boeing 777s for flights lasting less than many airport connection times.
However, these deployments are not simply about local traffic demand. Many of these flights operate around Turkish Airlines’ core connections, feeding passengers arriving from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas into the carrier’s broader network. The aircraft has also appeared on services to Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) and Medina Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED), including TK5276/TK5277 and TK5300/TK5301, where high-volume travel flows make a nearly 500-seat aircraft particularly useful.
