Chinese company Honeycomb Aviation and Malaysia’s MARA Aerospace have signed a $23 million deal to establish a drone manufacturing facility in Malaysia. Set to become operational in 2025, the facility will have the capacity to produce 3,000 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) annually.
Assembly Plant to Be Established in the First Phase
As part of the initial phase, Honeycomb Aviation will set up a drone assembly plant at the Kuala Lumpur University Institute of Aviation Technology campus in October. Once the facility reaches full capacity, it is expected to produce 3,000 drones per year.
Technology Transfer and Regional Development
This collaboration extends beyond production, aiming to support technology transfer and regional drone development activities. Former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and current Member of Parliament Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized that this agreement is a crucial step for Malaysia’s drone industry and will greatly contribute to vocational and technical education efforts in the country.
Valuable Experience for Students
A key aspect of the deal is the active involvement of Kuala Lumpur University students in the drone manufacturing process. Through technology transfer from China, students will gain significant experience in production and development processes. Dr. Zahid highlighted that this partnership will help cultivate local experts capable of producing Malaysia’s own drones in the future.
Strategic Importance of Regional Demand and Investment
The $23.1 million investment is being made in response to the rising demand for drones in the region. The UAVs produced will be designed for use in border security, agriculture, and various industrial sectors. Dr. Zahid noted that this collaboration will enhance Malaysia’s capabilities in defense and technology.
