Barely three weeks after entering presidential service, the “Bridge” Air Force One is already heading back into the shop. On Sunday, President Donald Trump told reporters that the Qatar-donated Boeing 747-8 jet will be taken out of service for additional upgrades. It comes after the quad jet has already served as Air Force One on a handful of trips over the past few weeks, including a visit to Mount Rushmore, the FIFA World Cup final, and even a high-stakes overseas trip to the NATO Summit in Turkey.
The aircraft, intended as a temporary solution while Boeing continues work on the long-delayed Boeing VC-25B replacement fleet, has raised numerous security concerns, especially during and after the President’s trip to Turkey. In fact, while Trump flew on the Qatari-gifted aircraft to Turkey, he returned to the United States aboard one of the two old VC-25A jets due to the lack of critical defense systems, as reported by the New York Times earlier this month.
“Maxed Out” Upgrades Planned For Bridge Air Force One
Speaking to reporters on Sunday after returning from the FIFA World Cup final, Trump acknowledged that the Boeing 747-8, adorned in the new presidential dark blue and red livery, would soon return for another round of modifications designed to enhance its capabilities as Air Force One.
“It has a lot of capability but, as I understand it, in about a month or so they’re going to send it to have it be maxed out,” Trump said, adding that the aircraft would likely spend about a month undergoing additional work before returning to service.
While the White House has not disclosed the precise scope of the upgrades planned for the aircraft, aviation and defense experts believe the work will likely focus on further hardening the aircraft’s defensive capabilities, secure communications systems and other crucial tactical upgrades. Unlike the purpose-built Boeing VC-25A fleet that will resume flying again while the new Air Force One is being upgraded, the Qatari-donated 747-8 began its life as a Boeing Business Jet, requiring extensive retrofitting before it could transport the President.
These initial modifications were reportedly carried out by defense contractor L3Harris under an accelerated schedule significantly shorter than the years normally required to equip all the required military and defense systems needed to carry the US Commander-in-Chief. That accelerated timeline is precisely what has drawn scrutiny in recent weeks, even causing Trump to return to the United States aboard the older VC-25A due to security concerns raised by the US Secret Service.
Renewed Security Concerns Surrounding New Air Force One Following NATO Summit
Trump’s announcement comes amid renewed scrutiny over the “bridge” Air Force One’s defensive capabilities, after reports suggested the aircraft lacks some of the sophisticated protections found aboard the existing VC-25A fleet. In a statement obtained by the New York Times, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said:
“The new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft that has been fitted with high-level security protocols that ensure the safety of the President and his staff. As Trump has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sighs on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats.”
Questions, however, intensified after Trump returned from the NATO Summit aboard one of the older presidential aircraft rather than the newly introduced 747-8. Although Trump initially suggested he simply wanted to fly on the older aircraft again, multiple reports indicated that heightened tensions with Iran prompted security officials to favor the legacy Air Force One, which carries more advanced missile-defense systems, hardened communications and other defensive capabilities developed over decades of service.
A former US Air Force official elaborated on the reported deficiencies of the new Air Force One, stating that “time didn’t permit all normal Air Force One modifications, so some mix of security, communications and support is missing.” Trump himself seemed to acknowledge the capability gap in Sunday’s remarks, noting that the aircraft would receive further enhancements to bring it as close as possible to the standards expected of Air Force One.
A former Air Force official claimed there wasn’t enough time to equip the aircraft with all of the “normal” modifications.
What’s The Latest With The Brand-New VC-25B Air Force One Replacements?
While the interim aircraft will receive additional upgrades and be “maxed out” according to Trump, it still remains only a bridge solution as Boeing continues developing the long-awaited VC-25B replacement fleet under a fixed $3.9 billion contract. Originally announced in 2018, the production of the new Air Force One jets have suffered years of delays and billions in cost overruns for Boeing, with projected delivery dates now scheduled for around mid-2028.
Unlike the modified ex-Qatari aircraft, the VC-25Bs are being constructed specifically for presidential service from the outset. The aircraft will incorporate hardened airframes, next-generation secure communications, advanced electrical generation capacity, aerial refueling capability, and fully integrated defense systems. Compared to the VC-25A fleet, the new aircraft will be significantly larger and feature more room for office space, dining rooms, bedrooms, and media seating.
Until then, however, the Air Force appears committed to improving the interim 747-8 to ensure it can safely shoulder presidential transport duties alongside the aging VC-25A fleet. Sunday’s announcement indicates those efforts are far from complete, even after the aircraft’s high-profile debut.
