The US conducted a bombing operation against military targets in Yemen to weaken Houthi militants who are storing weapons in underground facilities. The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit bomber, known for its stealth capabilities, was used for the mission. This operation marks the first time the B-2 has been deployed in an attack against Houthi militants.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated regarding the operation, “The deployment of the B-2 Spirit demonstrates the US’s global strike capability and its ability to engage targets anywhere when needed.” The use of the B-2 against the Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi organization is seen as part of the US’s efforts to increase its influence in the region and weaken militia movements.
The B-2 can carry up to 23 tons of conventional, guided, nuclear bombs, or air-to-ground missiles, and it can conduct long-range operations without being detected by radar. Developed during the Cold War to counter the Soviet Union, this aircraft is one of the most expensive military aircraft in the world, with a unit cost estimated at around $2.1 billion.
The US is also continuing to explore ways to combat militia groups that are operating against Western vessels in the Red Sea in support of Hamas. These operations are said to be conducted to showcase the US military presence and power against Iranian-backed militia activities in the region.
