United Airlines (UAL) has taken a groundbreaking step in in-flight internet services by signing a new agreement with Elon Musk’s company, Starlink. The deal aims to integrate Starlink’s satellite-based high-speed internet services into United’s fleet. Following tests that will begin in early 2025, the airline plans to install Starlink’s internet service on more than 1,000 aircraft over the next few years.
As a subsidiary of SpaceX, Starlink is making significant strides to strengthen its presence in the aviation sector, expanding beyond rural areas with limited internet access. Starlink has previously signed similar deals with Hawaiian Airlines and regional carrier JSX, and is now broadening its collaboration with United Airlines.
United Airlines announced that this service will be revolutionary for its passengers and offered free of charge during flights. The first passenger flights equipped with the service are expected to begin in late 2025, following the testing phase.
