Türkiye Takes a Step for the “Steel Dome” Project with SAMP/T
Türkiye is in talks with Italy for the SAMP/T air defence system. The aim is to establish a multi-layered missile defence shield with the Steel Dome project.
Türkiye Takes a Step for Multi-Layered Defence
Türkiye is conducting negotiations with Italy for the European-origin SAMP/T air defence system in order to strengthen its air defence capacity.
The system in question is planned to be an important part of the multi-layered missile defence architecture called “Steel Dome,” which Türkiye aims to develop.
Critical Stage in the “Steel Dome” Project
Ankara’s goal is to establish an integrated defence network against threats of different ranges and levels. In this context, the SAMP/T system is expected to provide strategic contribution to the project with:
- Long-range air defence capability
- Ballistic missile interception capability
- NATO-compatible integration infrastructure
Rising Regional Tensions Increased the Need
Increasing tensions and missile threats in the Middle East have accelerated Türkiye’s need to strengthen its air defence systems.
Recently, NATO elements intercepting certain missile threats directed at Türkiye once again highlighted the importance of improving the existing defence infrastructure.
France Factor Back on the Table
The SAMP/T system is developed by the Eurosam consortium. Previously, the joint production process with Türkiye had been suspended due to objections from France.
However, Turkish diplomatic sources assess that France may adopt a more positive approach to the project this time due to changing security dynamics.
Goal of Joint Production and Technology Transfer
The preliminary agreement signed between Türkiye and Eurosam in 2018 covered joint development and technology sharing. In the new process:
- Joint production
- Technology transfer
- Integration with domestic systems are expected to come back onto the agenda.
Technical Specifications of the SAMP/T System
The SAMP/T air defence system:
- Can destroy aerial targets with a range of 150 km and an altitude of 25 km
- Has ballistic missile interception capability at a range of 25 km
Operates with the Aster-30 missile
With these features, the system is among high-performance air defence solutions in line with NATO standards.
