Turkish Airlines has launched a new initiative to donate meal portions from passengers who opt out of in-flight catering. On domestic flights, the unclaimed meals will be donated to Kızılay soup kitchens, while on international flights they will be delivered to the nutrition centres of Yeryüzü Doktorları (Doctors Worldwide). The project aims to reduce food waste while providing support to those in need.
Support for Kızılay Soup Kitchens on Domestic Routes
Operating 44 soup kitchens across 31 provinces in Türkiye, the Turkish Red Crescent distributes more than 40,000 hot meals daily. Through this initiative, regular support will be provided to the elderly, people with disabilities, and those in need. Playing a critical role during disaster periods, the soup kitchens will further strengthen their capacity with the support of THY passengers.
Contribution to the Global Fight Against Malnutrition on International Routes
Donations collected from international flights will be delivered, through the Doctors Worldwide Association, to regions struggling with hunger and malnutrition. Medical nutrition support will be provided at nutrition health centres established particularly for children under the age of five, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. A single choice made by a passenger could turn into life-saving nourishment for a child.
A New Step in Sustainable Aviation
This initiative launched by Turkish Airlines stands out not only as a social responsibility project but also as an important step in environmental sustainability. Expected to prevent tons of food from going to waste each year, the project will also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint in aviation.
