Turkey’s Second Astronaut Prepares for Space Journey

Turkey’s second astronaut, Tuva Cihangir Atasever, will be sent to space from the Spaceport facilities in New Mexico, USA, on June 8th.

Orbital Suborbital Research Flight with VSS Unity

Atasever, aboard the VSS Unity spacecraft owned by Virgin Galactic, will conduct a suborbital flight reaching an altitude of approximately 14 kilometers. During the flight, he will carry out seven different experiments ranging from astro-particle physics to brain physiology, molecular biology, and genetics.

How Will the Return be Executed?

After the rocket engine fuel is depleted, the spacecraft will glide back to Earth from 90 kilometers without any active components. During re-entry into the atmosphere, a 4.5 times gravity acceleration will be felt, and the potential energy gained will be used for landing back on the launch site.

Who is Tuva Cihangir Atasever?

Born in Ankara in 1992, Tuva Cihangir Atasever received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University and completed his master’s degree at the University of California. After returning to Turkey, he worked as an avionics engineer at Roketsan for five years.

Success of the First Turkish Astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı

The first Turkish astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, conducted 13 experiments aboard the International Space Station during his space journey, which began on January 19, 2024. After spending 18 days on the ISS, Gezeravcı successfully completed Turkey’s first manned space science mission by returning to Earth on February 9th.
