Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced the September air traffic statistics released by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ). Uraloğlu stated that total air traffic reached 214,319 flights, marking a 2.4% increase compared to 2023. In September, 79,872 domestic flights and 87,583 international flights were recorded.
22.4 Million Passengers Flew in September
In September, Uraloğlu reported that domestic passengers at airports numbered 8,249,505, while international passengers reached 14,121,637. This brought the total passenger count to 22,415,821, representing a 1.8% increase compared to the same month last year. Additionally, cargo and freight handled at airports amounted to 478,803 tons.
Positive Developments for 2024
Uraloğlu highlighted that in the first nine months of 2024, the number of flights taking off and landing at airports across Turkey totaled 1,752,501. During the same period, the total passenger count reached 177,346,498, with 72,949,528 domestic passengers and 104,186,201 international passengers.
5% Increase at Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport served a total of 60,659,088 passengers in the first nine months of 2024, with 44,894 flights recorded in September. Uraloğlu noted that 1,600,230 passengers traveled on domestic flights, while 5,648,722 traveled internationally in September alone. This represented a 5% increase in total passenger traffic compared to the previous year.
Growth at Sabiha Gökçen and Tourism Airports
Sabiha Gökçen Airport served 1,589,000 domestic and 1,865,773 international passengers in September. Over the first nine months of 2024, the airport handled a total of 30,971,698 passengers. Airports in popular tourist destinations served 49,103,752 passengers in September.
Increase in Cargo and Freight Transportation
The total cargo and freight transported in September amounted to 85,108 tons domestically and 393,695 tons internationally. In the first nine months of the year, the total cargo and freight handled reached 3,712,255 tons, reflecting an 11.2% increase compared to the previous year.
