A domestically produced AT-5 Brave Eagle jet trainer aircraft belonging to the Taiwan Air Force crashed into the ocean on Saturday due to engine failure. The pilot ejected safely and survived the accident, which was recorded as the first major crash involving the AT-5 Brave Eagle.

Crash Due to Engine Failure

The AT-5 Brave Eagle, manufactured by Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (AIDC), had taken off from Chihhang Air Base in Taitung, on Taiwan’s eastern coast, for a weapons training mission. Shortly after takeoff, both of its engines malfunctioned. The pilot, who had only 183 flight hours, ejected safely before the aircraft crashed into the ocean.

Following the incident, the Taiwan Air Force announced that an investigation team had been formed to determine the cause of the crash.

The Indigenous AT-5 Brave Eagle Aircraft

The AT-5 Brave Eagle was developed as part of Taiwan’s indigenous defense industry projects to replace the F-5 and AT-3 trainer aircraft. It is capable of conducting air-to-air and air-to-ground combat training and has the ability to take off from short runways. Weaponization tests are still ongoing.

The Taiwan Air Force plans to acquire 66 AT-5 Brave Eagle aircraft by 2026. This jet is notable as the first domestically produced jet aircraft after the F-CK-1 Ching-kuo Indigenous Defense Fighter.

Taiwan’s Indigenous Defense Efforts

In recent years, Taiwan has taken significant steps to strengthen its domestic defense systems in response to China’s military modernization. The AT-5 Brave Eagle is a key part of this strategy, developed with consideration of China’s military exercises near the island. The Taiwanese government prioritizes strengthening its armed forces and advancing its domestic defense industry.
