United Nigeria Airlines Expands Fleet with 10 Boeing 737-800 Aircraft from Southwest Airlines
United Nigeria Airlines (U5) has signed a strategic purchase agreement with Southwest Airlines (WN) for Boeing 737-800 aircraft to strengthen its fleet and support growth in regional and international markets.
Under the agreement, the airline plans to integrate six Boeing 737-800 aircraft into its fleet by early 2027, eventually increasing the total to ten. These aircraft will complement the existing Embraer ERJ-145 and Boeing 737-500 fleet, enabling more scalable and efficient growth.

As part of the expansion plan, the first deliveries are expected by the end of 2025. By 2026, new domestic routes and regional destinations such as Accra will be launched. Preparations for longer international routes will also take place during this period.
Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, commented:
“The transition to the 737-800 will provide our passengers with more efficient and comfortable travel options while offering access to a wider network at competitive fares. This expansion will contribute not only to our airline but also to the growth journey of Nigeria’s aviation sector.”
Boeing Regional Sales Vice President Anbessie Yitbarek emphasized that the new aircraft align with United Nigeria Airlines’ growth strategy.
The fleet expansion is also expected to generate employment and economic benefits. Thousands of direct and indirect jobs will be created across training, operations, and support services. With Southwest Airlines’ high maintenance standards and training support, the integration of the new aircraft is expected to proceed smoothly.
