Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR., ADR: RYCEY) has successfully completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) for its F130 engine, marking a pivotal step in its development, testing, and production processes. This milestone represents significant progress toward delivering the updated B-52J aircraft to the U.S. Air Force.
Detailed Design and Close Collaboration
The F130 engine’s CDR was the result of over two years of detailed design efforts conducted collaboratively by teams from Rolls-Royce, the U.S. Air Force, and Boeing. This critical design phase represented the culmination of a meticulous process among these joint teams.
The engine testing program will advance to altitude testing in February 2025 at the U.S. Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Complex in Tullahoma, Tennessee. These tests aim to further validate the engine’s performance and integration compatibility.

F130 Engine Testing Progress
Rolls-Royce has recently completed the initial phases of sea-level testing for the F130 engine at its Indianapolis facilities. Additionally, successful “Rapid Twin Pod Tests” were conducted earlier this year at NASA’s Stennis Space Center.
- Sea-Level Testing: Conducted at Test Cell 114, the first software version for the engine was run, collecting critical performance data. These tests were part of Rolls-Royce’s $1 billion modernization investment in its Indianapolis facilities.
- NASA Stennis Testing: This was the first time the F130 engines were tested in a twin-pod configuration designed for the B-52. The tests validated analytical predictions, significantly reducing integration risks for the B-52J while achieving critical test objectives.

The F130 engines will be designed, manufactured, assembled, and tested in Rolls-Royce’s largest U.S.-based production facility in Indianapolis.
