RAF jets swiftly responded to a security alert involving a passenger flight traveling from Mumbai to London Heathrow. The fighter jets, based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, were scrambled on Thursday afternoon to intercept an Air India aircraft after a security alarm was triggered.
The passenger plane was put in a holding pattern over Norfolk and Suffolk as the situation unfolded. However, the alarm was later stood down, and the aircraft was allowed to continue its journey, landing safely at Heathrow at 1:32 PM.
Residents in parts of eastern England reported hearing a loud noise in the afternoon, likely caused by the jets responding to the incident.
A spokesperson for the Royal Air Force (RAF) confirmed, “We can confirm that a RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby was launched to investigate a civilian aircraft.”
The spokesperson further added, “Following an uneventful interception, the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey to its original destination under civilian air traffic control. The incident is now being managed by civilian authorities.”
