Throughout 2025, extensive inspections and operations were carried out at Istanbul Airport targeting passengers identified as transporting drugs using the “body packer” method. During the checks, a total of 29 kilograms and 700 grams of drugs hidden in passengers’ stomachs and intestines were seized.
High-Risk Passengers Placed Under Close Surveillance
As part of anti-narcotics efforts, passengers arriving from high-risk countries and regions were placed under surveillance from the aircraft door onwards, based on physical and behavioural analyses. Passengers deemed suspicious were stopped at customs control points and subjected to detailed examination.
If no findings were detected during baggage checks, passengers were directed to advanced inspection points.
Detected by X-Ray, Legal Proceedings Initiated
During X-ray scans conducted at the advanced inspection stage, legal proceedings were initiated against suspects found to be carrying drugs in their stomachs and intestines. In 2025, 24 passengers identified as transporting drugs using this method were apprehended and included in judicial proceedings.
It was learned that the majority of the seized drugs were cocaine.
More Than 100 Suspect Passengers Examined
Over the course of the year, more than 100 suspect passengers were subjected to detailed inspections, and it was emphasised that the “body packer” method continues to be a significant risk factor in international drug trafficking. Authorities stated that multi-layered security and inspection practices against similar crimes are being carried out with determination at Istanbul Airport.
